DATE WORKED: December 5th
GARDEN GROUP!!!
some of the observations i made before we started working were that the white leafs on the basil needed to be pick and the dead sugar cane needed to be picked up. the work that i did individually was that i picked off the dead sugar cane off the ground. we accomplished quite a bit we weeded, watered, picked off the leafs, and took care of the dead sugar cane. next week i think that the weeding could be a little bit more better because we didn't get it all out. since one of the tomatoes are growing we could make some ketchup.

My initial observations of the compost bins was that the worms had produced a lot of compost and their food supply needed to be restored. I also saw that the compost needed to be collected. I layered wet paper and rotting food onto the bins. From one of the bins I collected compost which will be used in the garden. The group tested soil to determine the nutrients in it and one person helped me with the compost bins. The next group should collect the compost and use it in the garden.

The observations that i saw before our group started working was that there was alot of flowers growing out of the basil. Also that there was alot of weeds near the banana trees. I worked on pulling the flowers off of the basil. I also helped by pulling weeds. As a group we accomplished pulling most of the weeds out, cutting off the flowers off of the basil, and watering the plants, and taro. The next group should continue pulling weeds near the banana trees. The should also water the plants. Right now the only plant that you could harvest is basil, but besides that your good to go.

The observations that I've made before our group started to work was that there was a lot of small weeds around the banana trees. I noticed that there were baby taros' in the black pots. Individually I took pictures of the garden before & after. I also pulled the weeds. Our group members watered the plants and pulled weeds. Next time when our group works we should continue pulling weeds if there is more and continue to water the plants. With the harvest, we should have throw a salad party (if we have enough harvest) for our biology classes. We should share the harvest among our classmates and have a little healthy snack time during lunch or recess.

I did this garden on November 7th. Before we began working there were quit a bit of weeds aroung the garden, the taro plants were dead and needed some care... the soil was dry, and the rossemary needed its flowers pulled. Individually, I gave all the taro plants fertalizer, planted a new taro plant, pulled weeds, and helped deflower the rossemary bush.I worked with Micah and Hamilton and we accomplished a lot. we complely watered the entire garden, we pulld dead leaves off the tomato plant, we planted a new taro plant into a pot, gave all the taro plants fertilizer, pulled weeds, and deflowered the rossemary bush. I think the next group needs to continue to water the plants, watch the tomato plant for the tomatos that are almost ready to be harvested, and continue to pull weeds and deflower the rossemary bush. Once the tomatos are ready to be harvested we should make an easy little dish and habe all the biology and biology honor kids enjoy it at lunch one day.

Response:
Last
week was my garden group time and it was fun! The before and after pictures
that were taken to show how much work we did was posted on the garden blog last
week. I worked in the garden on October 11, 2012 from 3:00 to 3:30. Before we
began working on the garden there was lots of weeds around the entire garden,
there was dead plants, and the sugar cane had lots of broken and dead branches
on it. I contributed to the garden by pulling out lots weeds around the banana
trees, cutting dead branches and leaves off the sugar cane, and also pulling
weeds in the front of the garden near the sidewalk. I also took some of the
pictures that were posted on the blog. My group accomplished quite a bit
overall. We took out most of the weeds around the banana trees, cleaned up the
sugar cane, and we tidied up the garden and took out any leaves, sticks, and
weeds we found around the garden. I think the next group needs to continue to
pull the weeds and maintain a nice clear area so that we can plant new plants
in the future. I also think they should continue to maintain the sugar cane and
cut it down so the plant doesn’t grow out of control. We harvested one tomato
while I was doing my garden work and I think everyone should try it and see how
cool it is to grow your own food for free. All it takes is a little time,
patience, and love.

I removed dead portions of the sugar cane and removed weeds that were growing near them. I also watered the sugar canes.
Work accomplished as a group:
As a group, we worked on removing the rest of the weeds in the garden.
Work that should be done by the next group:
The next group who will be working in the garden should take out the remaning weeds that are in the garden.
What we should do with the harvest:
We currently do not have anything to harvest in the garden.
Sunday, November 11, 2012
Date Worked: Wednesday, November 10 , 2012
Time: 3:00-3:30pm
People present: Micah, Cayla, Hamilton
Observations: I noticed that there was still some weeds around the plants. The basil seemed to be thriving. We also saw that there were more tomatoes growing on the tomato plant.
What I did individually: I pulled out almost all of the flowers on the basil plants. I also pulled out some of the weeds surrounding the plants.
What the group accomplished: We pulled out almost all of the flowers on the basil plant. Also, we watered the many of the plants including the sugar cane, taro, and basil plants. Lastly, we pulled out many of the weeds surrounding the plants.
What needs to be done by the next group: I would like the next group to pull out more of the weeds in the garden and pull out more of the dead sugar cane leaves. The plants should be watered too.
What should we harvest and what should we do with it?: Nothing should be harvested at this time but when the tomatoes are ripened, they can be harvested. The harvest should be shared amongst our classmates and the SAS staff.

3) Observations you made initially before you started to work.
The water in the aqua planter was had particles of dirt in it and when we took out the filters they were covered with waste. Also the only one of the plants seemed to be benefitting from the aqua planter.
4) What work you did individually in the garden? What work your group accomplished?
The individual work that I did was cleaning out the filter, emptying the water from the container, refilling the container, cleaning out the beakers and test tubes. My group members did tests on the water to determine the elements in it, cleaned the containers, helped me refill the container, and took the fishes out of the container.
5) What you think needs to be done by the next group?
The next group should make sure the filter is cleaned, change out the water, check if there are any changes in the water and see if the plants are growing.
6) What should we do with the harvest?
Seen these plants are just in the aqua planter to get a head start you should take the plants that are ready to be planted in the garden and plant them.

garden group 5 biology.
HI all! I'm in garden group 5. i worked with kailen on Thursday October 25, 2012. some of the observations that me and kailen made were that there were a few weeds, dead leaves from the sugar cane, and that we needed to take care of the white flowers on the basil plant.
some of the individual work that i did was the watering, and weeding but when kailen was done cleaning off the leaves from the sugar cane he came to help me.
so at the end of the time that we worked we accomplished quite a bit. we pulled off the dead leaves from the sugar cane, weeded by the banana tree, and picked off the white flowers off the basil tree managing not to get stung by bees.
i think that the next garden group should maybe try to trim the tomato plant so that maybe with trimming it that it would grow.
with the harvest that we had from the garden such as the basil. we should make some salsa.

I saw weeds and some tomatoes on the tomato plant. I saw lots of basil and bees surrounding the small white flowers on the stem.
4) What work you did individually in the garden? What work your group accomplished?
Individually I worked on picking the stems on basil plant. I picked weeds & threw it in the barrel.
Our group picked weeds that we didn't plant. One of our group members watered the plants in our garden.
5) What you think needs to be done by the next group?
I think that we should pick more weeds, if there is any more. Check on the tomatoes, see if they're ripe enough to pick. We should continue doing our regular routines (picking weeds & watering plants).
6) What should we do with the harvest? First we should see if they are ready to harvest. We should share the harvest with our group members.

Date that I worked: 10/11/12
Some obsevations that I made when I ws working in the group was that there was a lot of dead leaves on the sugar cane. And also that there was weeds around the banana trees. And lastly that there was a tomato on the bush.
In the garden my individual work was that I worked around the sugar cane and pukk the weeds by it. And also take the dead leaves off the sugar cane. And pull weeds around the bananas.
We worked all together in the same general area. And did about all the same effort in the garden.
Work that is work behind the sugar cane with the big weeds. And pull around the bananas.
With the harvest of the tomato we should eat salso and chips. And maybe we should give it to the food bank.

Garden Group 1: JD, Sam, Olivia, Hamilton and Alice - 9/19/12
When and what time I worked:
I worked on Wednesday September 19th, after school from 3:00 PM to 3:30 PM.
When I observed the garden, there were a lot of weeds growing in the garden. Also, the rest of the garden was pretty much dirt, with some sugar cane and small banana trees.
Individual work:
I helped with a few things. First off, I took the before and after pictures on Mrs. Betancourt's camera and helped pull out some weeds. After I pulled out the weeds, I placed them in a wheel barrow.
Group work:
Sam, Olivia, Hamilton, Alice and I had the task of clearing weeds. To make this task easier, we all split up into small groups to work faster. We cleared a lot of the weeds, but not all of them.
Group Accomplishments:
We accomplished clearing at least 95% of the weeds that were initially there. We worked together as a team and completed our tasks.
What I think needs to be done with the next group:
The next group should clear all of the weeds that we were not able to clear. This would make the area ready, and more fertile to grow more plants.
What should be done with the harvest:
The harvest should go to any hard-working garden group workers and the overage to the cafeteria. It would be a good reward for working hard in the garden and getting the job done.

Group 2 Joshua Schwartzlow
Garden Group 2- Wed. Sept. 25, 26
Date Worked: Wednesday, September 26, 2012
Time: 3:00-3:30pm
People Present: Joshua, Rey, Ian, Taylor, Ivana, Destiny
Observations: The soil in the garden plots were mostly cleared of weeds and dead plants. While we were working in the garden we noticed that the dirt was very rock and compact. Half of the basil plant was covered with flowers. The plants that were in the garden were basil, tomato, banana, and sugar cane.
What I did individually: First, I broke up the compact soil with a pickax and a shovel. Second, I dug holes in the soil with the shovel. Third, I planted Kale, Lettuce and Rosemary in the newly dug hole. Finally, I ended my garden work with watering the plants I had planted.
What the group accomplished: Half of the group focused on pulling off the basil flowers and pulling out any weeds they could find. While the other half of the group worked on digging the holes, planting the plants and loosening the dirt.
What needs to be done by the next group: The next group should make sure that all of the recently planted plants should be watered and the whatever weeds we missed should be pulled out. The next group should plant more plants to keep the soil from eroding away.
What should we harvest?: The basil is ready to be harvested.
Hard working Gardeners
When I worked:
I worked on a after school at 3 o'clock to 3:30. It was very hot and it was on Wednesday after school on September 19.
Observations Before garden:
When I went to the garden it was very, very weedy like it had alot of weeds and it also was hot.
What I Worked On:
I worked on pulling weeds and throwing away the trash. I was working so hard trying to pull the weeds I almost fell back. When I threw the weeds in the trash the dirt particles started going in my eyes and it was horrible. I felt like I was torchered.
Group Worked On:
Our group worked on pulling weeds and throwing the trash. Alice, Olivia, Sam, JD, and I worked very good. There was alot of weeds everywhere so we broke up into different places to work on and most of us finished alot of weeds and threw it away.
Our Group Accomplished:
Working together as a team to finish the job and we communicated very well and no one got hurt. Also everyone went home safe and sound.
Next Group:
They should accomplish doing the same things as we did so it would a good and better environment for the plants to grow better.
Harvest:
I think the harvest should be given to the most hard workers which are the students who work in the garden and deserve a bit of appriciation for working hard under the hot melting sun.

Garden Group Three- Wednesday, October 10, 2012
Date Worked: Wednesday, October 10, 2012
Time: 3:00-3:30pm
Those Present: Micah, Nikki
Observations: There were some weeds growing around the plants- but not many. The sugar cane needed to be worked upon because of the many dead leaves hanging from the stalks. The basil was thriving, but we needed to pull out the small "flowers" on the plant. All of the plants were in need of watering. There were many small tomatoes growing on the tomato bush.
What did I individually do in the garden?: I pulled out some of the small "flowers" on the basil plants. I also removed many of the dead leaves one the sugar cane stalks. In Ms. Betancourts's classroom, I planted some hydroponic plants such as four o'clock flowers and bush beans.
What did the group accomplish?: We pulled out moat of the small "flowers" on the basil plants. We also removed many of the dead leaves one the sugar cane stalks. We watered the basil, sugar cane, taro, and tomato plants. In Ms. Betancourts's classroom, we planted some hydroponic plants such as four o'clock flowers, bush beans and lettuce.
What needs to be done by the next group: I think the next group should comntine to pull out weeds and water the plants. They should also pull off all dry leaves on the sugar cane. Lastly, the next group should check to see if any of the tomatoes need to be harvested.
What should we harvest?: If found that the tomatoes are ready to be harvested, the next group can harvest them.
