I worked with Megan and Tiana on Wednesday, February 5th, 2014. Before we started to work, I noticed that the whole garden was overgrown with weeds. There were large weeds with thick stems and thorns that were difficult to pull out. The paths between stepping stones were overgrown, and the kale looked like it was about to be choked out. The compost bin was getting a little low and the worms needed new scraps. Individually, I worked on the papaya trees. I weeded out two of them and most of the area between there and the sidewalk. I also helped carry bags of paper to the compost bin. As a group, we accomplished weeding a fair portion of the garden. We restocked the compost bins. We also tended to the worms. The next group should keep weeding the garden, specifically the area around the herbs on the end towards the bandroom. They definitely need to be cleared. Otherwise, they could pose a threat to the survival of desirable plants in the garden. With the harvest, we should cut up the papaya and bake them to make papaya chips. The kale can be used in salads. It would be nice when the sugar cane is mature to give all biology students a chunk so they can all taste what sugar tastes like in it's purest form.
