Garden May 20

I worked on Tuesday May 20, 2014. Before working I noticed that there were many weeds, but things still needed to be harvested. As an individual I picked weeds under the banana tree and a little by the sidewalk in that area. As a group we mainly picked weeds around the right side of the garden near the band room. Well I know we are the last group but the next group could pick more weeds and finish harvesting. We could do anything with harvest, but a salad looks best.

Friday, May 23, 2014

I worked on 5/21/14 with Maeflor, Travis, David, Gaby, and Zeke. Before we began to work, there were a ton of weeds. They've been growing extremely fast, especially since we've just pulled a bunch. We individually weeded around the papaya tree and the strawberries. Next year, we should continue to plant and pull weeds. Hopefully the current 8th graders will be assigned to do that. With the harvest, we should give the fresh fruit and vegetables to the cafeteria.

Garden Tuesday May 13

I worked on Tuesday May 13 with Tiana. We worked by the Papaya trees to weed the area. We noticed that the tarp that was laid down to keep the weeds down by the tree was put down wrong because there were weeds growing underneath it. For next week or next year I recommend still keeping the garden groomed and grow more flowers to make it look nice.

Garden Group 4

On Wednesday 14, 2014. I worked in the garden with Austin. Some observations we made were that Flowers were growing on the papaya tree (a.k.a. Maeflor's papaya tree) and that the plants were surrounded with tons of weeds. We couldn't identify whether it was a weed or a plant so there were a lot of random spots of plants/weeds. There were also papayas and strawberries growing in the garden along with sunflowers. They were really pretty. I think the next group (whoever that is) should really do more weeding and planting. THE GARDEN NEEDS CARE.

I worked on May 21st, 2014. The people with me were Chandlette, Maeflor, Travis, and Zeke. Before we started working, there tons of weeds, ranging from small to big. Individually, we all pulled weeds and pat the dirt back to make a smoother surface of dirt. At the end, we accomplished getting a good portion of the garden cleaned, but not enough to get rid of it all. The next group should continue to weed the garden and work on the compost. However, that is the last week of garden group workers, so the next garden groups after them, will be the future garden groups should follow our footsteps except do a better job by keeping it clean and weed-free. We should use the harvest for creating foods for the class or give it to the cafeteria to make healthier foods to serve at lunch.

Tuesday, May 20, 2014

Today 5/20/14 I worked in the garden.
Me, kehau, grant, zeke, brannon, koltyn worked on the garden today 5/20/14. I pulled many weeds around the sidewalk that leads to the band room. Zeke and Brannon also did the same but in different areas. Some administration workers came by to get vegetables and look at the garden. This is the last garden group of my 9th grade year and hope the new 9th graders can keep it clean and keeps the food still eidible.

Saturday, May 17, 2014

I worked on Tuesday May 13, 2014 with Claire Parker. When we got to the garden it was covered in overgrown weeds. It looked like no one took care of it for weeks. Claire and I both weeded in the front around the papaya trees. We accomplished making that area clear of weeds. The next group really needs to weed all over the garden, its pretty bad. I couldn't see the harvest but there were some strawberries that could be picked.

Garden

I worked on May 14, 2014 with Gaby. Before we started working, I noticed that a lot of weeds were present around the garden and the ground was very muddy and wet. I also noticed that the dirt was clumped around the weeds, making them harder to pull out. Individually, I worked on pulling out weeds and cleaning the hydroponics system. My group accomplished weeding a portion of the garden around the papaya tree and cleaning out the filter of the hydroponics system. I think the next group should weed more around the papaya tree and around the sunflower/ tomato plants. With the harvest, the class should make a pizza and have all the harvested crops as toppings. It could be a vegetarian pizza.

Monday, May 12, 2014

I worked on Tuesday, May 6, 2014. I initially saw that the garden had many weeds and was very dry. Individually I pulled weeds and put the remains in the dumpster. I also watered the whole garden. It was a very dry and hot day. Our group pulled almost a whole 4 ft. x 4 ft. section of weeds. The next group should WEED. We have a lot of weeds all over the garden that may jeopardize our harvest. We should make a salad. We have fruits, lettuce, and tomatoes. We can also eat the salad during finals! (instead of a test) just kidding

Garden

I worked in the garden on May 7th by myself. When I looked at the garden, all I saw was weeds so first I watered down the area I was planning on weeding.  I started to weed by the stepping stone so we could walk in the garden.  Then I migrated over by the bigger area of weeds. I think our first priority is to weed around the plants so they don't suffocate. I also think that we should harvest the veggies that are ready to eat so we could possibly have a salad again before school gets out.

I worked on Wednesday May 1st, 2014. Before I started working I went to all of the classrooms with compost buckets and emptied them into the vermiculture bin. Before I started weeding I noticed that there was still many weeds around the plants growing, so that is where I decided to start. Also, many of the plants we planted are starting to grow large, some might even be ready to harvest. Individually I weeded a lot of the area near the sidewalk, but close to the front row of plants. I continuously made my way up thought to about halfway through the plants. As a ground we all weeded in about the same area. Except Jordynn who mainly weeded near the top. The next group definitely needs to weed more, a lot more. There are a variety of vegetables and things that can be harvested. I think we can always make a salad, but just having everyone take a bit home is a good option too.

We worked on Tuesday, May 6, 2014. Before starting work, the main observations I made were that the garden was looking particularly dry and was overgrown. It hadn't been raining lately, and apparently the assigned weeding wasn't being kept up in the long run. The weird, thorny, big weeds were growing back. They were pretty hard to uproot in the first place, so their reappearance was 100% negative. Individually, I weeded out a pretty big patch of soil using a hoe and a hand trowel. I also watered the garden. It was kind of hard to figure out how to hook up the hose. It took us a couple minutes to figure out. Finally, we gave up on the spray-control nozzle and just held the hose. At first, the technique to uproot weeds with the hoe wasn't very successful, but after a few tries, it worked just like we thought it would. As a group, Colin and I weeded and watered. We weeded behind the sunflowers and in the back of the garden behind the papaya trees. We also successfully watered all the plants in the garden. The next group definitely needs to keep weeding. They should also redo the covering tarp, seeing as the current one is not working. Colin and I would be able to oversee that project because it is our group's responsibility. The harvest can be used to make a salad, either fruit or traditional. We could also make tacos and use basil, chives, tomatoes, and lettuce as garnishes.

Friday, May 2, 2014

I worked on 4/30/14 with Jordynn, Soraya, Megan, and Grant. Observations I initially made before working was that the garden was filled with weeds. It really needed to be cleaned up. We individually worked in several areas in the garden. I was able to weed for about 45 minutes, harvest, collect bins, and dump the food scraps in the compost bins. Weeding and harvesting the vegetables were the main accomplishments. The next group needs to weed and plant some more. We didn't really have much time to completely finish it. We should make salad with the harvest.

4-30-14
Today I worked in the garden with Megan, Jordynn, Chandlette, and Grant. We all took different sections of the main garden and started weeding. If you can see, all of our crops are growing very well. Unfortunately so are our weeds. We plan to tend our growing vegetation and weed so we may add more; such as cucumbers, squash, and cantaloupe.

Friday, April 25, 2014

On Wednesday April 16 I worked with Gaby, Claire, and Austin. When we first got to the garden I noticed that there was a lot of weeds everywhere. Gaby and Claire weeded by the compost and Austin and I  weeded in the garden. Towards the end we also cleaned up the sugar cane. The next group she continue weeding around these areas.

Austin

On April 16, 2014, I worked with Gabrielle, Claire, Tiana. I observed that the garden was pretty lacking in terms of weeds, except for around the plants. Individually I worked on pulling weeds from the ground in the general area around the crops, such as lettuce and spinach. My group accomplished weeding a large area of the garden along with picking and stripping dead leaves off of sugar cane. The next group should water the garden, pick more weeds and get more dead leaves from the sugar cane. We should take the harvest and feed it to cats that are around campus.

April 23, 2014

Today I had worked with Reina in our aquaponic garden.  The observations that was made prior to our work was that there had been seed that had been planted and hadn't sprouted any roots.  These seeds had been removed, and replaced with more seeds.  Together we had planted cucumbers, cantaloupe, and achillea 'moonshine' flowers.   The work that should be done by the next group, is that if these seeds begin sprouting roots that they should be replanted and placed into the garden outside.  The things we should do with the harvest is making a fruit salad with the bananas and cantaloupe, or grilling the cucumbers.

Garden blog for Mitchell

4-16-14 Garden Blog When I worked in the garden we pulled weeds all around the plants. These plants were cantaloupe and I believe some tomatoes and they were planted by the banana tree. I think that with the large selection of vegetables we may be very close to having our own salad bar without having to buy the actual produce.

April 16

I worked April 16 with Gaby, Austin, and Tiana. Gaby and I worked on deweeding the compost area. The weeds there are really deep rooted, so I recommend getting a shovel and digging the weeds out by the root. Then, we worked need the sugar cane to remove the weeds. There's a lot of weeds there but be careful not to pick out the wrong things. I also recommend watering the whole garden.

Garden on April 16, 2014

Last Wednesday, I worked in the garden with Claire, Austin, and Tiana. We started off weeding the Compost area, then watering the compost bins and then moved to the actual garden area after. We weeded the areas near the sugar cane and cleaned up the dead sugar cane leaves. The garden really needed some care and helpful hands to look pretty and ready for planting again. Because of this, the next group should weed the garden and get more done than we did.

April 9th

I worked on April 9th with Keoni and Mitchell. We started to weed out the area by the banana tree. Then we planted a cantaloupe and 5 watermelons, I think. The next group should weed under the black tarps and then dig a whole and put the black tarp in the whole and cover tarp with dirt so it is harder for the weeds to grow through the tarp.

April 8, 2014

This Tuesday I had worked in the garden on April 8th, 2014.  The observations that I made before we had started was that there were a lot of weeds in the garden and a pile of dried up leaves by the sugar cane.  The individual work that I did was pulling out weeds near the banana tree, dumping dirty water from the vermiculture bins, and placing the  fish into the hydroponic garden.  The work the group did as a whole was working throughout the garden weeding specific areas, working in the vermiculture area, and working on the hydroponic garden.  The next group needs to weed.  We should make a salad with all of the lettuce grown.

Last week Wednesday I worked in the garden to get rid of the invasion of weeds by the banana tree. I didn't completely clear the area, but I knew that the area will be later on used to plant watermelon and cantaloupe.

Wednesday, April 9, 2014

The next group should continue to weed out the weeds and clear the dead foliage from the sugar cane.

I worked on Tuesday the 8th of April. Before I started to work, I noticed that the garden was seemingly over-run with weeds. The ones that bothered me the most were the large, thorny ones by the papaya trees. I also knew that the hydroponics division needed some assistance. I could see that the food we planted was growing amazingly, especially the lettuce. Individually, I relocated seven fish from various tanks to the hydroponic tank. I also assisted dumping worm water into the garden. It stank so bad. After that was done, we weeded out the garden as much as possible. I got out all those thorny plants that were bugging me before and also weeded the area by the bananas. As a group, we accomplished a lot. We set up the ecosystem within the hydroponic tank. We cared for the worm division. We put some compost in the compost bin and weeded out several areas in the garden. We should make a fruit salad out of the watermelon that we're going to plant, the papayas, the strawberries, and the bananas when they bloom.

Garden group 4/9/14 Travis Delima

This tuesday I did garden group. I worked on the compost and garden. Me and others put papaers and food scraps into the compost buckets. I almost threw up because of the smell. We had to put shreded paper in layers inside of the buckets and then put the food scraps on top of that then put another layer of paper. After we got through with that I went to the garden to pull weeds around the papaya tree. The weeds are getting really big so the next people that do garden group should pull weeds.

Wednesday, March 26, 2014

On March 25, I worked only with Ms. Betancourt in pulling some weeds out of the garden. Before the work started, there were weeds almost the size of the papaya trees(the trees weren't really that big yet). After the 30 minutes was up, the bigger weeds were pulled out of the ground, and some of the weeds next to the papaya tree and tomato plants were pulled out. The work accomplished was just getting some of the weeds pulled out of the ground. The next group should focus on doing the same thing I did and/or work on the assigned tasks, like the vermiculture or the hydroponic gardening group. We will hopefully be able to use the harvest for future salads we can eat or give the crops to the cafeteria to use in lunches or salads there!

Garden Party

For 30 minutes, the vermaculture took out the worm castings by shoveling it into a bucket and removing any excess egg and avocado shells. Then we layered the last bin with wet shredded paper and food scraps and rotated the bins. Temperature: 55 degrees Celsius.

March 7, Garden Party

On March 7th, I worked for 2 hours. The compost group and I worked on weeding the compost area. We also added water to the bins and stirred them. We added green shreds to the bins. After working on the compost area I helped clean up the sugar can area. Gaby and I worked on getting everything into the giant trash can in the back. I had to get into the trash can and stomp stuff down.

Thursday, March 13, 2014

I worked on the 25th and 26th of February. Since Mrs. Betancourt was absent, I had to work alone. Nobody else showed up. I pretty much pulled out extra weeds and watered the garden. The following group should probably plant some more . We also need to put up the garden signs to indicate which plant is which. With the harvest, we should serve it to our class. We can pig out for 45 minutes. I also worked on March 7, 2014 during the "Garden Party." I weeded for about 6 seconds before i moved on to vermiculture. During the 30 minutes, we checked the temperature and put the compost in a separate bucket. I took scraps of paper, got it moist, and layered it on the bottom bin. The next time we work, we should finish layering the bin.

I worked on Friday March 7th. Some observations I made was that the garden was overwhelmed with weeds, the future flower bed was starting to be cleared out, and plants needed to be planted. Observations I made for the vermiculture bins were; the bins needed to be refilled with food and the top bin was ready for harvest. Individually in the garden I pulled weeds and helped with taking trash that was compiled. Individually in the vermiculture, I put the harvested castings in a bucket to be given to the garden, and I placed a layer of paper on the bottom bin. As a group in the garden we all pulled weeds, planted new seeds, managed the compost bins, and clear the space for the new flower bed. The next group definitely needs to pull weeds and try to plant more vegetables. With the harvest, we could make a salad, have a fruit salad(watermelon), or vegetable soup.

Garden, Group 4

Last Wednesday and Friday, I worked in the Garden. On Wednesday, I worked with David, Austin and Mindy. We pulled weeds the entire time and cleared out most of the big weeds. Celia also came by and helped us out with watering the garden. On Friday, it was the Garden Party and we pulled out the weeds and plants by the Compost bins. The area is now cleared. We also cleared the sugar cane area out a little. The next group should pull out the rest of the left over weeds and scraps from the cleared areas and get some crops planted.
