Cayla (Garden Group 3)

Hello All, We are going "GREEN" for the Garden Observation Posts! (Get it "Going Green" "Garden"-HEHEHE!!) So here is what each individual needs to include in their posts: 1) a picture of your group working or before and after pictures of the garden on your workday 2) Date you worked 3) Observations you made initially before you started to work. 4) What work you did individually in the garden? What work your group accomplished? 5) What you think needs to be done by the next group? 6) What should we do with the harvest?

Response:

2. March 27, 2013
3. The amount of the weeds in the garden was overwhelming. They were absolutely everywhere and they were over powering the plants that we currently have growing in the garden.
4. Individually, I pulled weeds, took pictures, and helped with the placing of the tarp. Our garden group cut down weeds, pulled weeds, watered plants, and placed down a tarp and cinder blocks to help kill the weeds.
5. The next garden group needs to continue to pull weeds and monitor the plants under the trap to keep track of them.  If the weeds under the tarp look wilted then they can take the tarp off and begin removing the weeds.
6. The was no harvest this week

Alex's Response

I worked on the garden on 3-20-13. Before we started working, there were a lot of overgrown weeds next to the fence by the band room. The worm pit had also not been replenished with newspaper. Individually, I worked on clearing out the weeds in the section of the garden next to the band room. I pulled up weeds, raked them out of the garden area, and threw them into the dumpster after transporting them with a wheel barrow. As a group, Amanda and I put fresh newspaper into the worm pit and cleaned out a lot of the weeds. We also watered the soil.
The next group needs to continue with the weeding, because there is still much to be done. We might want to consider putting tarp over the weeds, so as to kill them faster. With the harvest, I think we should give some of it to the community, if we can get them to help out with the garden over the summer.

Treyanna-Lee Freitas- Garden Group 3

Date I worked on: March 14, 2013.

Some observations that I made before I started to work was that there was a lot of weeds by the banana trees and a lot of dead sugar cane leaves that should be cleaned out. In the garden my individual work that I did was water the garden because it was only me that went from my group and also I couldn't use tools because I didn't know the combo for the tool shed. Work that my group/I had accomplished was that we gave the plants water so that they could live longer. The next group should clean around the bananas and cane and pull the weeds in front of the sugar cane. With the harvest of the sugar cane we should cut up the sugar stalks and sell them in the snack shops and maybe with the money we get from the sugar cane stalk sale we could get more useful stuff to the garden like more seeds to plant so we have more harvest.

Micah Garden Group 3

Date Worked: Wednesday, March 13, 2013
Time: 3:00-3:30pm

Observations: Although there were vast improvements from previous weeks, I noticed that there was still some weeds around the plants. The basil seemed to be thriving.

What I did individually: I pulled out most of the flowers on the basil plants. I also pulled out a lot of the weeds surrounding the basil plant.

What the group accomplished: We pulled out many of the flowers on the basil plant. Also, we watered many of the plants including the sugar cane and basil plants. Weeds near the basil plants were also pulled out.

What needs to be done by the next group: I would like the next group to pull out more of the weeds and water the plants. Now would also be a good time to place a tarp over the areas containing weeds. This should help us eliminate the weeds faster.

What should we harvest and what should we do with it?: Nothing should be harvested at this time. When harvest is available, it  should be shared amongst our peers and teachers.
